Teaching about trans health and inclusion is a vital step in creating and strengthening organizational and individual capacity to serve transgender and gender expansive youth in a variety of settings, including healthcare facilities, mental health clinics, academic institutions, and others. There are both practical and ethical considerations that must be examined in order to teach this material effectively and work with learners’ needs. This workshop will provide an interdisciplinary introduction to teaching about trans and gender expansive youths’ needs and health, and approaching capacity building using trans-affirming conceptual frameworks. We will discuss basic facilitation skills and curriculum building, and examine the ethical responsibilities we take on in teaching about gender and speaking about trans youths’ experiences. We will also address issues around how facilitators' identities interact with the material, and the importance of using intersectional frameworks that center marginalized experiences on multiple axes.
